SponCon returns on Saturday, September 14, 2019!

SponCon is the nitty-est, gritty-est, smashin-est, bashin-est, clangin-est, bangin-est, creativist, barbaloot savin-est party in town!

Here’s the rundown of awesomeness from SponCon 2018:

SPONCON 2018 SCHEDULE
9 a.m. – Building contest begins
11 a.m. – Kids activities open; Food trucks start serving
1:25 p.m. – Found sound explosion

SPONCON 2018 MUSIC:
DJ Mermaid – 9-11 a.m. – A wax aficionado, spins a fun upbeat groovy set, blending genres to get those hips shaking.
Bill LaCroix – 11-11:45 a.m. – As Bill’s business card states, he is indeed “The Real Deal.” Playing a deeply rooted mix of self-proclaimed “left-of-center Americana,” Bill is equally proficient in guitar, banjo, Rocky Mountain dulcimer, saw, and voice. We think he’s one of the Treasure State’s true musical treasures.
Suzuki Strings – 12-12:30 p.m. – We are Missoula-area students and teachers engaging in music through the Suzuki method. We learn and play classical and folk music. We gather throughout the year for various activities, and our signature event is the Montana Suzuki Institute, a music camp presented by the Missoula Symphony Association. Ensemble pieces interspersed with solo features displays some of Missoula’s budding musical talent
Cello Mafia – 12:40-1:25 p.m. – The Cello Mafia is a cello band of adolescents that like to play pop music.Teaching artists are Jessica Catron (lead), Josh Stevens, and Jeremy Drake.
Students are Adelaide Terwilliger, Alexis Long, Autumn Schelvan, Beaux Dunning, Brooke Best, Brynn Begley, Evan Jones, Henri Naughton, Jatayo Jones, Jordan Gillespie, Juliet Geilen, Liam Vetter, Lydia Garrick, Max Rosen, Noah Everett, Sarah Ferguson, and Tait Kuchenbrod.
Found Sound Explosion – 1:25-1:45 p.m. – Anyone who wishes can bang and clang on a variety of unique instruments constructed at Home ReSource for 20 minutes of joyful noise. No clang/bang experience necessary!
The Beet Tops – 1:45-2:45 p.m. – The Beet Tops are an old-time string band on a mission to bring traditional Appalachian music and southern square dance to all corners of Montana. With roots from West Virginia to the West coast, they take listeners on a musical tour that predates bluegrass and the invention of the steam engine. The Beet Tops have played barn dances and festivals across Montana, including the Red Ants Pants Music Festival, Big Sky PBR, and the Missoula Old Time Social. Band members include Claire Baer on fiddle, Rob Terwilliger on banjo, Brian Herbel on guitar, Travis Yost on bass, and Chelle Karcher on fiddle or calling square dances.
Crypticollider – 3-4 p.m. – Crypticollider is a eclectic fusion of hard and psychedelic rock styling that pulls influence from countless genres and bands. INFLUENCES: MGMT, King Gizzard and the Lizzard Wizzard, Pink Floyd. Crypticollider consists of Troy-Michael Adams (guitar), Dylan Findlay (drums), and former Home ReSource Youth Intern Shane Findlay (multinstumental, vocals).
The Spills – 4:15-5:45 p.m. – We know the suspense is killing you.

Designed to inspire a culture of reuse with a free, engaging community activity, Spontaneous Construction, or “SponCon” for short, has become an annual Missoula tradition. Contest participants have seven hours to use their choice of Home ReSource materials to build the most beautiful, functional, and creative pieces they can dream up.

We provide a variety of enjoyable, inventive reuse activities, music, and access to local food vendors for contestants and spectators alike. The event draws teams of artists, DIYers, and builders to create works of art and utility, as well as approximately 500 onlookers just there for the fun. After the judges announce winners, some pieces are auctioned on site, and top-judged creations go to the Benefit Auction.
